A tragic incident unfolded in Pune’s Kundamala area as an old bridge collapsed over the Indrayani River, leading to casualties.

On Sunday afternoon, June 15, 2025, an old iron bridge over the Indrayani River in the Kundamala area of Pune district collapsed, causing a tragic accident. The bridge, built around 30 years ago for farmers to cross the river, was not designed to handle large crowds or vehicles. NCP MLA Sunil Shelke said the bridge had been repaired several times over the years and that tourists were not allowed to use it. However, it collapsed due to the heavy load from too many people and two-wheelers gathered on it.

The collapse happened during the monsoon season, when the river was already swollen due to heavy rainfall. Many people fell into the river when the bridge broke. Rescue teams, including the NDRF, SDRF, local police, and fire services, quickly arrived and started rescue operations. So far, 38 people have been rescued, and six were pulled out from the water. Sadly, two people have died, and about 32 others were injured, with some in critical condition. Authorities believe that 10 to 15 people might still be trapped under the remains of the collapsed bridge.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed grief over the incident and said the government is keeping a close eye on the rescue work. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde confirmed the number of people rescued and announced that an investigation will be carried out to understand the cause of the collapse. Locals had reportedly raised concerns earlier about the weak condition of the bridge. Following the incident, the area has been closed off, and people have been advised to stay away. This heartbreaking event has once again highlighted the urgent need to check and maintain older public structures, especially in tourist-heavy areas.
